Pawleys Island is a barrier island less than 4 miles long and mostly one house wide, separated from the mainland by a beautiful salt marsh and accessible by two short causeways. The island is known as one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast. Pawleys continues to be known for its shoeless, carefree, laid-back life style, which includes crabbing in the adjacent creeks, fishing, the stories of ghosts, the rope hammocks and the unspoiled, unsophisticated, casual, delightful stretch of wide beach and sand dunes. The mainland town of Pawleys Island has seen some commercial construction in recent years, much to the dismay of many residents, though this growth pales in comparison to the pace of Myrtle Beach. The sparse population also adds to the allure of Pawleys. With only 138 residents, the island remains a peaceful haven.

Twelve residences remain in the historic district, which date back to the late 1700’s to the mid 1800’s. The historic district displays a number of hints of the antebellum era and the homes that were typical of that time.

There is a large assortment of Pawleys Island real estate. Many of the homes feature a weathered look as a result of the commonly used cypress siding, further adding to Pawleys designation as “arrogantly shabby.” The town has a good mix of modern residential and older, residential styles, with each home having its own unique stamp.
